What is a diode diode transformer?

A split diode transformer is a type of transformer configuration used in power circuits to provide two isolated outputs. This involves using a transformer with a center plate on the secondary winding, combined with diodes arranged in a bridge or full wave rectifier configuration. This configuration allows the transformer to provide both positive and negative DC voltages relative to the central TAP, creating two separate outputs from a single AC input.

The diode transformer is commonly used in applications requiring dual polarity power supplies.

To split a transformer, you typically use a transformer with a center blow on the secondary winding. This center tap divides the secondary winding into two equal halves, allowing two separate AC voltages relative to the center tap. By connecting the diodes to the center tap and the ends of the secondary winding, you can create a dual polarity output.

For example, in a full-wave rectifier circuit, the center tap serves as the reference point, while the two ends provide the positive and negative voltage outputs.

The three main types of transformers are:

  1. Step-Up Transformers: These increase the voltage from the primary winding to the secondary winding while decreasing the current proportionally.
  2. Interfering transformers: these decrease the voltage from the primary winding to the secondary winding while increasing the proportional current.
  3. Isolation transformers: These provide electrical isolation between the primary and secondary windings, maintaining the same voltage level but isolating both circuits.
