Frequency to Parts Per Million (PPM) Converter

This converter allows you to transform the variation of a given frequency into PPM (parts per million) . It takes into account the nominal frequency of the signal and the measured variation, and provides an accurate result expressed in parts per million, useful for evaluating the precision and stability of oscillators.

Formula

PPM = (Δf / f₀) × 10⁶

Explanation of the formula

The formula divides the frequency variation Δf by the nominal frequency f₀ to obtain the relative fraction of variation. Then, she multiplies by one million to express the result in parts per million. This conversion makes it possible to quantify the precision of an oscillator independently of its frequency scale.

Uses

  • Evaluate oscillator drift in RF and microwave systems.
  • Check the temporal stability of quartz circuits, PLLs and digital clocks.
  • Document performance of timing components for technical specifications.
  • Help compare oscillators regardless of their nominal frequency.
