Line of Sight and Radio Range Converter

The line of sight converter allows you to estimate the maximum distance between two points based on the height of an antenna. This conversion is essential for telecommunications engineers and wireless network designers because it helps predict a radio system’s coverage and transmission range under ideal barrier-free conditions.

Formula

dₗ = 3.57 × √(h)

dᵣ = 4.12 × √(h)

Explanation of the formula

The first formula calculates the direct line of sight distance (dₗ) in kilometers based on the antenna height h (in meters). It represents the geometric limit of the visual field without obstacle between the transmitter and the receiver.

The second formula estimates the radio range (dᵣ), slightly greater than the line-of-sight distance, because it takes into account the refraction of radio waves in the atmosphere. This correction makes it possible to obtain a more realistic value for terrestrial communications.

Uses

  • Planning of wireless, Wi-Fi, microwave or VHF/UHF radio communication networks.
  • Range assessment of radar systems and relay stations.
  • Design of long distance telecommunications networks.
  • Quick estimation of antenna coverage limits in a clear environment.
