VSWR to Reflection Coefficient and Losses Converter

This converter allows you to transform a VSWR (Voltage Standing Wave Ratio) value into a reflection coefficient Γ, a return loss (RL) and a mismatch loss (Mismatch Loss, ML). It provides a comprehensive assessment of the matching quality of a transmission line or antenna.

Formula

Γ = (VSWR – 1) / (VSWR + 1)

RL = -20 × log10(Γ)

ML = -10 × log10(1 – Γ²)

Explanation of the formula

The reflection coefficient Γ quantifies the fraction of the signal reflected by a poorly matched impedance. A value of Γ close to zero indicates good adaptation.

The return loss RL translates Γ into dB, measuring the reflected power relative to the incident power. High RL corresponds to low thinking and better adaptation.

The ML mismatch loss indicates how much power is lost due to impedance mismatch. It is useful for calculating total losses in RF systems and optimizing the coupling between antennas and transmission lines.

Uses

  • Evaluate the quality of adaptation of an antenna or transmission line.
  • Identify the fraction of signal reflected and the associated losses.
  • Help size RF circuits with minimal reflection and loss.
  • Ensure optimal performance in communications and radar systems.
